Academic Use Cases and Awards

The range of use cases of EST's 'research apps' is broad and includes applications in both academia and practice. It is also not limited to the event study methodology but also empowers other event-driven analyses such as event history and optimal-matching analyses. As exemplary academic use cases, please find below a list of publications that build on the capabilities provided by EST.

Teaching Case Studies

  • Schimmer, M., Müller-Stewens, G., & Sponland, P. (2011). ' The Battle of Apple, Microsoft, and Google: Strategic Lessons from a Converging Internet Industry 2000-2010' ECCH (European Case Clearing House).

This case study grounds on press release scraping in combination with date identification. It plots and explores the evolution of the Internet industry from the perspective of the three major industry incumbents. The case study is among the best-selling case studies at ECCH and is used for teaching at business schools such as the University of St. Gallen or the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta.

Articles

  • Brauer, M., & Schimmer, M. (2010). 'Performance effects of corporate divestiture programs'. In: Journal of Strategy and Management, 3(2), 84-109.

This paper combines press release scraping with date identification, event categorization, and an event study. It investigates novel performance antecedents within sequences of competitive moves. The article was awarded the 2010 Best Paper Award of the Journal of Strategy and Management.

  • Schimmer, M. (2012). 'From Crisis to Opportunity: How Market Shocks Impact Interfirm Rivalry'. In: Best Paper Proceedings of the 2012 Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston, MA.

Similarly to the paper presented above, this proceedings paper combines press release scraping and date identification with event categorization. With its broad empirical scope combining various types of competitive moves and its daily record of these moves, the paper raises the level of detail in competitive dynamics research. This article has been published in the 2012 AOM conference proceedings and was a finalist for the 2012 William H. Newman Award (nominated by the BPS division).

  • Luger, J., & Raisch, S. (2012). 'The Paradox of Static and Dynamic Ambidexterity'. Presented at the Strategic Management Society's 32nd Annual International Conference in Prague, October 6-9, 2012.

Also, this paper grounds its dependent variable on the semantic analysis of an extensive body of press releases. Methodologically, it combines press release scraping, date identification, and event scaling (along the dimensions of exploration and exploitation). This article was awarded the 2012 Best Conference PhD Paper Prize by the Strategic Management Society.

Research Projects

Several research projects at the University of St.Gallen are currently investigating characteristics and elements of larger news streams, e.g., the news flows originating from the S&P500 index firms, fast-moving consumer goods firms, and financial service firms. We have investigated several event types to expand academic knowledge, such as Alliances & Joint Ventures, Chief Strategy Officer appointments, and Corporate Program announcements.
